Swine flu symptoms
Everyone should watch for symptoms of the latest strain of Swine Flu and get early treatment for possible cases of the flu.
First, you can’t get Swine Flu from eating pork so changing your diet won’t have an effect, according to health experts.
The flu can pass from human to human through coughing, sneezing or touching infected people or surfaces, then touching the mouth, nose or eyes – the same way as most viruses spread. So: cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze. Use tissues and throw them in the trash. Wash your hands with soap and water. Use alcohol- based hand sanitizers. Avoid sick people (and close contact with people who have been to Mexico recently). If you are sick, stay home. People who have been exposed can get a prescription for the antiviral drugs oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir (Relenza).
Symptoms are fever, fatigue, sore throat, cough, poor appetite, body aches and chills with possible nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. If you have these symptoms, especially with some jaundice (yellowed skin and eyes), call ahead to let your doctor know you are coming in so you can be isolated from other patients when you arrive.
The World Health Organization says the overall mortality rate of this flu is 1% to 4% but that’s about the same for other flu types. The real stats won’t be in until more is know about the spread and effect of this particular disease.
